HI, I AM JAMES
"James's time with me has been one of the most inspiring chapters of my career...his legacy lingers in every training session, every match. Even now, I speak of him as the model of what an athlete should be. His passion for squash transcended the mere desire to win."
- Faheem Khan,
Hong Kong Men's Team Coach
Hello, I am James, a former PSA player and the founder of AJ Squash Academy in Taipei, Taiwan.
I began my professional squash career at the age of 16, without a coaching system or funding to support my dreams of playing in the Professional Squash Association (PSA). I relied on discipline and my passion for the sport to get myself to the PSA. My unconventional path gave me a unique perspective on how squash is played, how to train, and how to become a professional.
After retiring from professional squash, I returned to Taiwan to train the next generation of players with the lessons I learned along the way from some of the best players and coaches in the squash world.
I have over 20 years of squash coaching experience, for both players and other coaches alike. I have trained most of the top competitive players in Taiwan, as well as a number of talented college players currently playing in top squash programs in US colleges.

MY COACHING PHILOSOPHY
AND APPROACH
I still actively train 6 days a week. I am constantly "dogfooding" my own coaching, and evolving it to stay in sync with the evolution of the game.

Unlike most coaches that start their coaching career after their career as a player winds down, my competitive playing career and my coaching career took place at the same time out of necessity.
In order to make it the PSA, I had to mostly study the game on my own - absorbing valuable knowledge about the game through valuable advice I received along the way, and incorporating it into my own coaching philosophy.
In my own playing career, I had to constantly study and try new things just to have a shot at beating higher-ranked players.
As a coach, I approach each student from different angles — constantly experimenting, and no cookie-cutter training systems. I adjust and blend my coaching style based on the player. I am experienced in observing my students and picking up on the smallest details —not just in their game, but also in their approach to practice and training.
For me, squash is not just a job - it is what I love to do. I believe that passion is an important ingredient for successful coaching.
I adopt a number of different formats for training, depending on the goals we are trying to achieve. The goal is to improve technique, physical performance, mental and strategic improvements at increasing difficulty and pressure levels so that we achieve dependability in match play
